Periodontal disease is an important reason for tooth loss in adults. It is essentially an infection of the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease may be caused by inadequate tooth cleaning or tobacco use but may also be caused by several medical conditions such as diabetes. Periodontal therapy is an important part of your general dental care. It consists of periodic dental hygiene care and may consist of medical or surgical care by our periodontology faculty and residents.
