Periodontology

• Boston University is proud of its leadership role in the development of periodontology as a dental specialty and our internationally recognized faculty.



• At the Institute, the degree in periodontology emphasizes the sciences essential to understanding the principles of this clinical specialty. The study of and proficiency in the clinical medical sciences, microbiology/immunology, clinical periodontology, Implantology, principles of occlusion, orthodontics, oral medicine, oral pathology, and oral biology are all key elements of the program.


• The three years of the program are devoted to the clinical practice of this specialty, with additional clinical sciences and clinical research activity. A hallmark of the Institute program is its combination of clinical strength and academic depth in a setting that coordinates patient care with the full spectrum of dental specialties. Students learn to base treatment decisions on biological principles. The Institute provides a critical mass of students and faculty to foster spirited discussion and collegial interaction.
